Nena Anderson
The Sweetheart of Americana
Available Solo, Duo or 5-piece Band.
"Distinct as late career Joni Mitchell, strong as Emmylou Harris, warm as Mary Chapin Carpenter all rolled into one: an original is born."
Nena Anderson’s voice is velvet, a rich contralto, smoothly able to change from a whisper in your ear to a howl…soulful, sexy and intimate. Her phrasing and stage presence are reminiscent of jazz greats: bluesy, reserved, commanding you to watch and listen.
Currently Nena fronts her solo band (Nena Anderson) as well as honky-tonk band, Brawley. In addition she is also a member of collaborative book/album/concert project, For The Sender, and tours with Johnny Cash Tribute, Cash’d Out, as June Carter Cash. Nena has shared stages as support for such artists as Lucinda Williams, Gregg Allman, Raul Malo, Dave Alvin, Switchfoot, Dan Hicks, Cindy Lee Berryhill, The Blasters, Charlie Musselwhite, and Albert Lee.
Performing in San Diego and nationally with various ensembles, her band projects have earned 13 San Diego Music Award nominations, in the categories of Best Jazz, Best Acoustic, Best Americana, Best Tribute and Best New Artist. Several of her tracks have been released internationally.
Anderson has been interviewed on KPBS Midday Edition as well as many local FM and online radio and tv stations. Her band, Brawley, was featured on the first season of KPBS “Belly Up Live” television series.
Beyond the Lights earned a Best Album recognition and multiple award nominations, as well as comparisons to early Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones and Bob Dylan for its accessible and deceptively uncomplicated lyrics and timeless songs.
