Spectral Echo
Spectral Echo is a four-piece instrumental band from Portland, Oregon that finds a link somewhere between progressive rock and post-rock. Formed in late 2015, Spectral Echo began working on original material in early 2016. The guys in the band had been jamming together for a few years previously, and realized that the chemistry and level of musicianship was ideal for forming an official band. The eclectic influences of indie rock, classic rock, progressive rock, post-rock, and metal all aid in the cinematic sound Spectral Echo creates together. All members share in writing material for the band.
Spectral Echo drummer Glenn Schmitz, originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, started playing drums in 1997. He played drums with the math rock band Mechakucha, a band signed to indie label Frenetic Records. In support of their album "One Million Safe Hours," Mechakucha toured the West Coast with The Fucking Champs. Schmitz had not played drums for some years until R.J. Young invited him to play on Young's album "12:34." Schmitz has done some work as a session drummer, and is an accomplished guitarist as well.
Bassist Nate Otani grew up in the Portland area playing in several local bands, and played many of the local venues. Otani drummed for the band Pictorials, who toured the West Coast with Black Moth Super Rainbow. Otani has also done work as a recording engineer, and producer. Otani started his musical career on bass, but he, too, is an accomplished guitarist.
Guitarist Chris Korsak, also originally from the Portland area, earned his B.A. in music from the University of Oregon. Korsak has recorded two solo albums and three guitar instructional CDs. A source of pride for Korsak is that Spectral Echo is the only band he has ever been in where he likes all the material the band plays, and that each of the members is a composer.
Guitarist R.J. Young, a native of Portland, spent his years in college studying classical composition. Even though his first love is rock music, Young looks to classical music for its epic compositional stylings. Young has played in many rock bands in the past, and recorded albums with the bands Bob and Meridian. Young has also recorded one CD of his classical music and, more recently, two instrumental albums of Americana art rock, "12:34" and "Fade." Young has produced and engineered other recording artists over the past few years.
Early 2017 will see the release of Spectral Echo's demo recordings. The demo is of six original tracks totaling 40 minutes in length. Produced and engineered by Young, the band's entire demo was recorded in one day with no overdubs. Because they performed the tracks live together, there is a raw energy captured in the recordings.
Spectral Echo is a band that is not afraid to fully embrace any of their influences. They create a spacey and often loud rocking sound together. That sound is easily heard in their new demo.
