Based in LA, but willing to travel.
Sariyah Idan embodies fiery sensuality rooted in cultural, social and verbal poetry. A New York bred and Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Ms Idan’s evocative style is influenced by soul and reggae’s spiritually political groove, the resiliency in jazz, the celebratory culture mix of Latin styles, hip-hop’s wisdom of overstanding and the sounds of her Jewish ancestry. Her lyricism is inspired by both intimidate personal experience and deep engagement with issues of the day. With a passion for ethnomusicology and social movements, Ms Idan intentionally mixes multiple genres not simply as a sonic tapestry of her environment but also as an expression of social activism and is indebted to her mentors, including Melanie DeMore, for guiding her in this practice. Her understanding of world culture began at age twelve as a touring dancer and singer with world music and dance ensemble The Vanaver Caravan. She has shared stages with Pete Seeger, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Yusef Lateef as well as recordings with Marcia Griffiths and Caron Wheeler on Dubblstandat’s album Woman In Dub. Fusicology reviewed the release of her debut solo EP Deeper Than Skin in December 2014 as “powerful, soulful, spirited songs filled with stories of joy, struggle, love and social justice”.
