The Austin, TX native’s new single “Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool” is a fun way to start the week! — From "The Tonight Show Featuring Jimmy Fallon" Tumblr
One of Austin’s rising, homegrown soulful singer/songwriters has already received coverage from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Vinyl Mag, Talk Nerdy with Us, Pure Volume, and more with the release of her debut eponymous EP in the fall of 2015. Even before the release, Malia was invited to play official showcases at SXSW and CMJ 2015, and, along with those invitations, she also already had early success winning a local songwriter of the year award with songs from the EP (BeBobAlooza 2014). Reviews have described the album as “nothing short of amazing” with an “infusion of pop melodies with country guitar licks” that “pairs perfectly with her sultry and soulful vocals” (Talk Nerdy with Us; Eat Sleep Breathe Music). In fact, one reviewer even exclaimed, “my only complaint about this record is that there aren’t more songs” (Talk Nerdy with Us).
Malia graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors from The University of Texas at Austin in 2013 with a degree in Music Business and Business Foundations. After graduating, Malia chose to pursue her passion for songwriting full-time rather than go on to grad school or accepting tempting offers in the business world. Credited by fellow musicians and mentors with an amazing ear for music and excellent pitch, Malia attributes much of these gifts to her efforts to overcome what doctors thought to be profound hearing loss as an infant and toddler. She focuses on bettering her craft daily and hopes to give listeners a cathartic experience with her music. She endeavors to inspire audience members to walk away learning something new about themselves and feeling more confident as a result.
This year Malia regularly appeared at One-2-One Bar, Highball, the Austin Bergstrom International airport, and played at many venues in her career including, Stubb’s, Antones, Darwin’s Pub, and elsewhere. Malia is also a hired vocalist at various Austin churches, including Riverbend Church and St. Matthew’s Episcopal. She is also a favorite at weddings, both for sacred music during the service and for her original wedding song, “The One,” which has been featured in wedding videos.
