Based out of Ocean Beach, San Diego, Song and Salt is a musical collective that crafts a distinctive "Tropical Underground" sound. Driven by high-contrast rhythms and deep sonic textures, the project delivers a sun-bleached, atmospheric blend shaped by its core influences: high-tide G-funk, surf hop, and coastal dub. Led by producer and songwriter Kevin Mankins, the project centers around a core rhythmic partnership with long-term percussionist and backing vocalist Ed Fletcher. Stripping away traditional genre boundaries, the collective delivers music that is simultaneously laid-back and intensely driving, visually and conceptually leaning into a "Subterranean Surf Psychedelia" aesthetic that captures the grit, warmth, and trippy undertones of the southern California coast.

The group's sonic signature relies on heavy, low-end coastal dub weight, low-slung G-funk grooves, and sharp surf hop sequencing engineered right from the shore. This foundational groove was recently showcased in The Distilled Sessions, a completed project featuring stripped-down, acoustic, and "unplugged" reworks that put the collective's raw songwriting on full display. Today, that sound is fully realized in their main reference single, "Waves from the Trench," featuring the razor-sharp lyrical delivery of Locness (Johnathan Longway).
